Better Balance, a plant-based protein supplier under the Sigma Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Papa John’s to expand its plant-based menu options across Spain and Portugal, meeting the rising demand for plant-based alternatives in the foodservice industry.
Under the agreement, Better Balance will supply plant-based protein products for two of Papa John’s vegan pizza offerings—Green Ranch and Green BBQ—along with a plant-based starter in the form of vegetable fingers. The plant-based protein options include a combination of wheat, soy, and pea proteins, which Better Balance has developed to provide a balanced nutritional profile without compromising on taste.
Bringing plant-based to the masses
“Partnering with a recognized brand like Papa John’s gives us a valuable opportunity to bring plant-based eating to a wider audience. Our focus is on making plant-based food enjoyable and accessible to more people, and Papa John’s commitment to quality and innovation aligns with that goal,” said Florencio García, General Director of Better Balance in Europe.

Success across sectors
Following its success at sporting events and with professional athletes, Better Balance has been seeking further opportunities to expand its presence in the foodservice industry. The brand’s products are already available in supermarkets, universities, and major cultural venues in Spain, and it continues to grow its footprint in the food sector.
In addition to its presence in foodservice, Better Balance has also achieved notable success in the retail sector, with its plant-based sausages garnering recognition as Product of the Year 2023 in the vegan sausage category at the Grand Innovation Awards. The company currently offers 12 plant-based products in major Spanish supermarkets.
“This collaboration reflects our ongoing efforts to provide innovative, plant-based options”
Papa John’s has been expanding its range of plant-based options across international locations, including the recent launch of a new vegan pizza in the UK, as part of its ongoing collaboration with the plant-based brand La Vie.
Maria Estrela, Marketing Director of Papa John’s in Spain and Portugal, noted, “We prioritize high-quality ingredients, and this collaboration reflects our ongoing efforts to provide innovative, plant-based options that cater to changing consumer preferences.”
