Key Takeaways
- Mattresses should be replaced every 8 years or so.
- Quality matters, including factoring in the mattress materials, composition, suitability for the weight of the user/s, and considering warranty features.
- Purchasing a mattress online offers several advantages, including cost savings, convenience, and prolonged sleep trials to test the mattress under real-sleep conditions.
- The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress delivers in terms of a supportive yet comfortable sleeping surface, high-quality composition and craftsmanship, and timely, convenient delivery.
The investment in a new mattress is not insignificant, and finding the right product to suit the sleep and comfort needs of two people can make the selection process somewhat challenging. You need to consider your budget and fulfil your own health and comfort needs, as well as those of your partner.
I had been considering for several months that the time for a new mattress for us was approaching, and once I was able to convince my somewhat reluctant husband, it was with some trepidation that we decided to order our new mattress online.
We did some research and knew from experience that, while more expensive doesn’t always mean better, quality is extremely important. We also knew we wanted a pocket-spring mattress, and that it needed to be firm enough to suit my husband’s preference for a “harder” bed, but not feel hard from my perspective.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress has proven to be the right choice for both of us.
Is it Time for a New Mattress?
I remember my parents (and grandparents) using the same mattress for over thirty years. I also remember staying at my grandparents’ house and sleeping on my great-grandparents’ old mattress – which was lumpy and must have been at least 50-60 years old at that time!
NOW WE KNOW BETTER.
According to sleep scientists, doctors, and the Sleep Foundation, mattresses used under normal conditions should be replaced every 6-8 years, and it’s important to invest in the best mattress you possibly can.
Good quality sleep is imperative for human health and well-being, and the comfort and support of your bed make a huge impact on this.
It’s time for a new mattress when:
- It’s negatively impacting your sleep
- It’s more than 6-8 years old
- It’s noticeably damaged or sagging, with visible signs of wear including holes, stains, tears, etc.
- It’s making noise (especially old innerspring mattresses)
- You wake regularly with a sore back, muscle pain, or joint stiffness
- You are suffering more from asthma or allergies
- You sleep better on other beds (e.g. at hotels or the homes of friends or family)
It’s also important to know that, in an older mattress especially, you are not sleeping alone: mattresses can harbour an unsettling volume of dust mites (and their droppings), bacteria, mould, and other microscopic allergens. (It’s enough to give you the creeps and shop for a new bed NOW.)
Choosing a New Mattress
There are several things to consider when choosing a mattress. A cheaper model will degrade much sooner and likely not support a good quality of sleep. Materials used make a major impact on comfort, durability, and longevity – innerspring and all-foam models have shorter lifespans, while natural latex is the most durable mattress material. Caring for any mattress is important too: vacuuming it periodically, using a mattress protector under your bottom sheet, and promptly cleaning any stains effectively.
The Origin Hybrid Pro Difference
Origin mattresses are developed in collaboration with an international team of sleep experts, all focused on creating unbeatable sleep quality.
This particular model was designed here in Australia, specifically for Australian sleepers and our local climate, and it is crafted from premium locally sourced materials. According to the Origin website, profits from sales help protect our local wildlife and forests. The Origin Hybrid Pro has received more than thirty awards globally for innovation, design, and value, and was named “Premium Mattress of the Year 2023” in Australia and the UK. All of these factors were big selling points for us and definitely influenced our decision to opt for this mattress.
Unlike a lot of other modern mattresses, the Origin Hybrid Pro core is crafted with eight comfort layers. These include aerospace-grade titanium springs, extra-cooling bamboo foam, ErgoCoil™ Steel Microsprings, premium micro-weaved wool, Graphite Crystal Latex™ for dual-action cooling, and more. It is a hypoallergenic product, making it especially ideal for asthmatics and allergy sufferers like me.
Weighing 44kg (queen size) and at 30cm thick, the very sturdy mattress should be rotated head-to-foot periodically, but it never needs to be turned as older mattresses did.
This mattress, in a nutshell, is proving great for us due to its:
- Firm support, ideal for bad backs and sore hips, but without any pressure points. (According to the Origin website, the mattress firmness adapts to the weight of the sleeper, and it rates between 6-7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.)
- Optimal weight distribution – when one of us moves, the other doesn’t feel it.
- Good support at the edges.
- It’s really quiet – another boon for sleeping better.
- Cooling technology – which we look forward to in summer, as we both do get hot during the night in the warmer months.
It was delivered free (in a remarkably compact box!) and comes with a 120-day trial and a 15-year warranty – which extends beyond the recommended life of any mattress.
Looking for a Gamechanger for Your Sleep?
I am very satisfied with our choice and can’t recommend this mattress highly enough! I am sleeping comfortably and, as a regular nighttime insomniac, am pleased to report that my sleep indeed feels deeper, cosier, and more solid since replacing our older sleeping surface. Even my husband (who was more than ready to complain about this change) is happy with it and says he is sleeping well. From my perspective, he isn’t snoring as much, either – but whether that’s true or simply seems so because I am sleeping more deeply, I can’t say for sure.
While I am toasty warm on these chilly winter nights, I’m also looking forward to a cooler night’s sleep when the uncomfortable Aussie summer weather hits in several months.
Furthermore, the convenience, time savings, and value of ordering online rather than going to a bedding store and “trying” mattresses in public and for mere minutes at a time can’t be overstated.
If you’re due for a new mattress and prefer a supportive model, give the Origin Hybrid Pro a go.
