SIXTY YEARS AGO, The Beatles were causing teenage girls to lose their minds and their underwear, America was hastily preparing for its maiden lunar voyage and Australians were still watching TV in black and white.

Japanese watchmaker, Seiko, meanwhile, was launching Japan’s first diver’s watch, a category of watches that’s now ubiquitous, found on the wrists of everyone from worldly adventurers to captains of industry. You might, if you mix in such circles, even find one on a deep-sea pro diver.

Since creating Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965, Seiko has continuously advanced in diver’s watchmaking to meet the demands of professional divers worldwide.

Seiko’s first diver’s watch pursued reliability and safety, paving the way for many future innovations. In 1968, the company released a high-beat, 300m air-diving model, meeting the global standard for the time.

Seiko’s first ever diver’s watch

In 1975, Seiko launched the world’s first 600m-water-resistant model for saturation diving and used a robust titanium case, earning the trust of professional divers.

Since then, Seiko has continued to combine its unique technology and expertise to create numerous innovative diver’s watches that have been loved by adventurers and explorers, proving their reliability in harsh environments around the globe.

Based on historical models reflecting Seiko’s significant milestones, three new 60th-anniversary limited editions demonstrate how the Seiko diver’s watch has evolved in both functionality and design.

And this week, Seiko Australia celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Seiko Diver’s Watch, with an exclusive celebration held at the Presidential Villa on Level 88 of Crown Sydney. Guests were treated to sweeping views of the Sydney skyline, setting the scene for an event of heritage, innovation, and elegance.

Original diver’s watch models from 1965, 1968, 1975, and 1978 were on show. These iconic timepieces have defined the legacy of Seiko’s Prospex collection and continue to inspire the modern evolution of the latest Prospex releases.

Also showcased were the newly released 60th Anniversary Limited Edition models, reflecting the brand’s continual progression in both form and function. These pieces exemplify the precision engineering and bold design that define Seiko’s enduring commitment to adventure and innovation.
