Supermarkets are gatekeepers of our food system – and they’re uniquely placed to help accelerate the shift to sustainable, more nutritious, plant-forward diets. But until now, there’s been no unified way to assess how major European retailers are actually performing on climate goals and protein diversification.
That changes with the launch of Superlist Environment Europe – a new multi-country benchmarking initiative from the Questionmark Foundation, ProVeg International, WWF Netherlands, and Madre Brava. This tool evaluates the largest supermarket chains in eight European countries on their climate strategies and actions to rebalance protein sales toward more plant-based options.
This pan-European methodology, released this month, lays the groundwork for a landmark report due in spring 2026, offering a clear comparison of supermarket commitments across France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, and the UK.

The methodology gives retailers a roadmap for action. It assesses climate transparency, protein sales data, in-store nudging strategies, and more. The full benchmark will also offer tailored recommendations to help supermarkets lead the protein transition commercially, not just ethically.
So what’s in it for retailers? Rebalancing protein sales isn’t just good for the planet – it’s smart business. Meeting consumer demand for sustainable choices, identifying new product opportunities, and staying ahead of regulation all add up to a win–win.
ProVeg International is inviting retailers to find out more and to get involved now. Want to learn more about the Superlist, the methodology, and how retailers can lead the way in climate-smart shopping? Read ProVeg’s full article here, and for tailored support, get in touch with [email protected].
