The quality of your child’s sleep is as important as the quantity. Today’s families face many healthy sleep challenges. Things like busy work and school schedules, ever-present technology, and extra-curricular activity overload mean many families sleep routines can be easily disrupted. On top of that, recent studies suggest nearly 20% of all children may suffer from some type of sleep problem. Whatever the cause, the Sleep Disorders Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and our Sleep Medicine Clinics, help patients with poor sleep habits and more serious underlying medical conditions. The Disorders Center performs more than 850 overnight sleep studies annually.

Sleep studies are often ordered to find out if a child has problems breathing while asleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most common reasons for doing a sleep study. It is often found in children who snore, gasp for air, or stop breathing while asleep.

Children with enlarged tonsils may also have apnea. However, there are many other reasons why your doctor may want your child to have these tests. A doctor who is specially trained in sleep medicine will review the results of the sleep study. The report will be sent to your child’s doctor’s office or clinic.
