Australian company E.Tel Communications has been named a semi-finalist in the Go Healthy with Taiwan 2026 global innovation challenge for its Guardian at Home proposal.

The project – selected from a record 832 proposals across 62 countries – blends Australian software with Taiwanese health hardware to create a carer-focused wandering detection system for people with dementia.

The E.Tel Communications submission is an opportunity to win funds to help bring a new product to market, and as such is only a proposal at this stage.

But as one of the 20 semi-finalists, E.Tel Communications will now progress to the next phase of the competition, which involves one-on-one mentorship with industry experts to help further develop and refine the proposal.

E.Tel Communications general manager Zach Chen told The Ageing Agenda that being named a Go Healthy with Taiwan semi-finalist is “a great encouragement.”

“Taiwan makes some of the world’s most capable health wearables, and Australia has families who need them. Working with Osmile Technology, we want to combine Taiwanese hardware with Australian mobile connectivity and local support to help people living with dementia stay safe and independent at home,” Mr Chen told TAA.

Of the 20 semi-finalists, 11 projects look at smart healthcare solutions, including AI screening tools, remote patient monitoring and better equipment for clinics. The other nine are focused on sport technology and cycling, including injury prevention, rehabilitation, exercise for older adults and safer cycling.

E.Tel Communications is the only Australian company to progress to the semi-final round.

The innovation challenge aims to connect global innovators with Taiwan’s health and wellness industry to develop new solutions for health and wellbeing.

It is organised by the International Trade Administration and the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, and implemented by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council.

Six finalists will be selected to travel to Taiwan, where they will pitch their proposals in person, and three winners will then receive US$30,000 each to help bring their ideas to life.
