A new Deakin University research study titled “Food Insecurity and Fatherhood: A Narrative Inquiry of Expectant Fathers’ Experiences” is currently recruiting participants.

This important study is exploring how fathers experience access to safe, affordable and nutritious food — from the period before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and into the early months of fatherhood. The aim is to understand the evolving reality of food access for men navigating the transition to parenthood, and to identify what kinds of support would make a difference.

Why This Matters
Food insecurity can affect anyone, but it remains a hidden issue among fathers. Whether it’s cutting back on meals to support a growing family or facing anxiety about putting nutritious food on the table, many expectant dads deal with food stress in silence.

By participating in this study, you’ll help bring attention to the experiences men have around food access — experiences that are often missing from current research. Your contribution could influence future health services, support networks, and policy recommendations tailored to dads.

What is Food Insecurity?
Food insecurity occurs when a person or household doesn’t have reliable access to enough safe and nutritious food to maintain a healthy life. This can range from concerns about food running out, to skipping meals or experiencing hunger due to a lack of resources.

Who Can Take Part?
The study is seeking expectant fathers across Australia who are willing to share their experiences through two one-on-one interviews — one during pregnancy and another three months after the baby’s birth.

Study Details

  • An initial screening will determine eligibility.

  • Participants complete a short 5-minute survey.

  • Two in-depth interviews will follow:

  • Each interview lasts about 60 minutes.

  • Total time commitment: Approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Why Get Involved During Men’s Health Week?

Men’s Health Week is all about raising awareness and encouraging men to prioritise their wellbeing. This study is a chance to be part of something meaningful — by sharing your voice, you’re helping build a better understanding of fatherhood and food access in Australia.

Your story can help inform better support for dads who are doing their best for their families, often while managing their own quiet struggles.
