Queensland aged care provider UnitingCare has lodged a development application for its new Pinangba Hollingsworth Elders Village in Westcourt, Cairns.
The development will be supported by a government capital grant to replace the existing but ageing Hartley Street facility with a purpose-built aged care home.
The 42-bed village, which will offer First Nations elders quality care and connection, is being shaped in partnership with UnitingCare’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lead service delivery arm Pinangba and local representatives.
It will feature culturally informed meeting places, artwork and landscaping, alongside shared dining, living and kitchen areas similar in scale to a domestic house.
UnitingCare said it aimed to create a space where Elders felt comfortable, connected and respected, with care that honoured their culture and identity and supported their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
UnitingCare general manager of Pinangba Andrea Fox said the redevelopment was deeply meaningful for the community.
“Hollingsworth has always been more than a building. It’s a place where our elders come together, where stories are shared and where culture is lived every day. This new village will carry that spirit forward while giving our residents the modern, culturally grounded care they deserve,” she said.
The not-for-profit provider said it would work with residents, families, staff, First Nations leaders and neighbouring organisations to ensure a smooth transition as the village relocates from its current site at 269-277 Hartley Street in Portsmith to 72 Tills Street in Westcourt.
