NYC Bagel Deli West End Reviews

0 6

The shop is spacious and open, with big glass windows letting the sun straight in. It has an industrial look with lots of green plants, and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable.

There are wooden tables and chairs outside, and sitting out there in the sun feels restorative. The menu has plenty of choice: all kinds of bagel sandwiches, spreads and milkshakes.

A plain bagel with cream cheese starts at around $6.50, and sandwiches cost more.

It looks like a good place to spend a slow weekend afternoon with coffee and a freshly baked bagel.

The brie and cranberry bagel I’d go back for

I’m a serious brie fan, so the chicken, brie and cranberry bagel was always going to win me over.

I got it on a blueberry bagel, and the salty cheese goes so well with the sweet and sour cranberry sauce. It also has smoked chicken slices, toasted walnut crumbs and rocket, so there’s a lot going on in each bite, and it tastes fresh and appetising. I give it 5 out of 5.

The sweet tooth bagel is too much for one person

It’s good at first, with a strong flavour of cheese and jam, and the jam-soaked bagel is soft and moist. If you don’t love sweet things I wouldn’t order it, and it’s better shared with a friend.

The coffee

The latte has smooth, silky milk foam and a good balance. I like both the milk coffee and the black coffee here.

The long black is rich in crema, with a deep roasted flavour, and it was the right thing next to the sweet tooth bagel to cut through the sweetness.

You can also get a surprise bag

If you just want bagels to take home, the shop also sells surprise bags through a food-rescue app. You reserve and pay in the app, then collect within the pick-up window the shop sets.

Mine was $4.99 and had five plain bagels in it, including a cinnamon, a plain and a sesame, all from the day’s leftovers. There are no fillings or cream cheese, so you supply your own. I froze mine and toast one for breakfast.

What else is worth knowing

NYC Bagel Deli is a Brisbane-grown bagel business rather than a New York import. It’s run by Eddy Tice and Ania Kutek, who opened a permanent West End store in August 2016 and moved to the current bigger shop at 57 Vulture Street in April 2017, where you can watch the bagels being made.

Their West End and Chermside shops later earned a mention in the New York Times, and a 2024 round-up said another branch was coming in Dutton Park, which is the suburb Boggo Road sits in, so that matches what you saw. The Uber Eats listing for the West End shop shows opening hours of about 6:30am to 2:15pm on weekdays, so it’s a morning and lunchtime spot.

Would we go back?

Yes, for the other sandwiches. If you like a Brisbane bakery run, Nos. Bakehouse & Cafe in Dutton Park is just near the Boggo Road branch, Shibusawa Bakery has Japanese croissants, and Bella & Tortie in Stafford only opens on Friday and Saturday mornings. There are more in our dessert café reviews.
