Moon & Back Cafe Rosebery Reviews

0 8

I finally went to the Rosebery café that kept turning up on my feed. It’s a Japanese-style café, and the cakes are honestly really good without being too sweet, which is good news for matcha lovers.

There are always plenty of people in the shop, and there was a queue. You can also see lots of cute dogs. They have many kinds of cold brew, so you can drink your fill in one go.

If you like light, refreshing matcha, or you’re a real matcha fan, this one is worth putting on your Rosebery list. The atmosphere in the shop is genuinely comfortable, and everything looks good in a casual photo.

It’s a Japanese café with character, creativity and a clear identity.

OOPS – the one for milky coffee lovers

The OOPS has a generous amount of pistachio, and the espresso makes up most of the drink. If you like milky coffee, don’t miss it.

Black Forest – great berry flavour, but it came in layers

The Black Forest is good, with a strong berry aroma. It felt layered, though, with the cream being cream and the cold brew being cold brew, and they didn’t blend.

The black sesame cake was rich and moist

The black sesame cake is very rich, with black sesame cream in the middle and a moist sponge.

The black tea pudding

The black tea pudding the texture is a lot like a cold jelly cake. It looks exactly like the pudding emoji. I quite liked it!

The roll, the brownie and the canelé

The matcha roll cake’s sponge is soft. The canelé is delicious, with a crisp shell and a strong liquor aroma inside.

What else is worth knowing

Moon & Back is at Shop 7, 2 Crewe Place, Rosebery NSW 2018. It’s a café and lifestyle store from Elvan Fan and Carol Xu, using a seasonal blend from Surry Hills roaster Artificer, with pastry chef Xu drawing on her Le Cordon Bleu training for treats such as canelé in original or matcha-and-sake flavours.

That matches the strong liquor aroma you noticed, since the sake version is the one with matcha powder on top. Broadsheet describes a Black Forest coffee, a floral cold brew infused with cacao and berries and topped with cranberry foam, as a standout. The café also sells ceramics and artworks, so it feels a bit like a Japanese art gallery.

Would we go back?

Yes, for the Black Forest and the black tea pudding.
