Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & VIC) is bringing the Adelaide Fringe festival fun to its Adelaide residents so no one misses out on the fun.
Adelaide Fringe is a major event in the city’s social calendar attended by millions of people every year. But for many older people, including aged care residents, it can be challenging to attend the arts festival. So, the SCC Community Foundation is bringing the festival to them.
Matinee performances are free for residents throughout the program. SCC retirement village residents and home and community care clients were invited to attend a two-hour matinee performance at the Regal Theatre.
One of the shows that visited the homes this year was an interactive 70s-themed show called Rhythm & Razzle, featuring music, tricks and comedy.
SCC chief executive officer David Moran said the positive impact of it was immeasurable.
“It’s heartwarming to see the smiles on residents’ faces, to see them clapping and waving along and having a good laugh together,” Mr Moran said.
“Every show is a highlight of the year for our residents and the wellbeing benefits of this kind of engaging shared activity are obvious – they talk about it for weeks afterwards.
“Loneliness and isolation are serious health issues facing older Australians. That’s why programs like this are so important for the wellbeing of our valued residents.
“We are so grateful for our generous community foundation sponsors and donors for making this important program possible and for helping us to tackle loneliness and isolation in our community.”
Performances will continue across SCC’s Adelaide homes throughout March, and the tour will be extended to SCC homes in Darwin and Victoria later in the year.
