New IPC guidance released – The Ageing Agenda
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released the second edition of its Aged Care Infection Prevention and Control Guide, including new guidance on infection prevention leadership, personal protective equipment and respiratory disease precautions.
The guide is designed to support aged care providers to strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and aligns more closely with the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. It supplements the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare and was developed with input from the IPC Guidance in Aged Care Reference Group, which includes representatives from residential, home and community aged care settings.
A key addition is a new chapter dedicated to implementing an IPC Lead within aged care organisations. The Commission says the role can help strengthen connections between governance, the workforce and older people while supporting a shared focus on infection prevention, safety and wellbeing.

Other updates include:
- a new table outlining the types and features of face and eye personal protective equipment
- updated guidance on dental and oral care
- revised nutrition and hydration content
- updated respiratory disease precautions
- a revised cleaning schedule that differentiates between equipment, personal items, environmental fixtures and workplace items.
The Commission has also developed supporting resources, including posters and training modules.
The updated guide is now available here.
