The Wyatt Gordon Reviews

0 3

I’d been seeing the ube pancake at The Wyatt for ages and wanting to try it, so I took a day off work and finally went. The Wyatt is a cafe I’ve been going back to for years, and the more I eat there the more I like it. The food looks good, and it actually tastes good too, not just a pretty plate. This time the spring menu was out, and it was almost all purple.

Right beside Gordon station, a two to three minute walk from the platform. Easy by train whether you’re visiting Sydney for the holidays or coming from a uni nearby like Macquarie, it’s a quick ride. The cafe’s at 77 Werona Avenue, on the quieter side of the line.

Ube pancake

Best thing on the table by a distance. Two of us shared it and didn’t leave a bite. Ube and sweet potato mash on the pancake, a purple yam sauce poured over the top, and ice cream and fruit alongside. It never got heavy or sticky sweet, the ube flavour came through fresh and clear. Order this one first.

Ube Basque cheesecake

The other dessert we tried. Creamy and dense, with a strong ube flavour all the way through. The spring menu leans hard on purple, and this was one of the better examples.

Salmon ochazuke

New on the spring menu, and the one that got me in. Seared salmon in a fragrant sencha broth, with pickled plum, a savoury fermented fish topping, nori, spring onion and a little wasabi. You mix it all together as you eat. Filling without being heavy.

Wagyu beef bowl

A proper bowl, M8/9 wagyu with plenty of chew to it, sitting on quinoa and a pile of salad vegetables. Healthy and still satisfying.

Matcha flight

I order this every single time. Five small cups of matcha in different flavours, one of them an ube matcha latte this round, so you get to try a bunch of their signatures in one go. I’m terrible at choosing, so it suits me perfectly. It feels like a little occasion, it photographs beautifully, and it’s even better sharing it with a good friend. We also ordered the matcha cloud ube tiramisu, which is a big piece of tiramisu sitting in a purple yam and matcha drink. Sounds strange, works well. The matcha isn’t too sweet or too bitter, just balanced.

The jacaranda tree

There’s a large jacaranda right by the front door, and it’s only just starting, a few flowers out so far. Picture sitting at the table out the front in a nice dress with the tree in full bloom, and a table full of purple dishes in front of you. That’s going to be a good photo. The spring menu is seasonal, so if you miss it you wait until next year.

Worth it

We’ll be back once the tree is out. Opening hours are 6am to 3pm on weekdays and 7.30am to 3pm on weekends, with the kitchen closing at 2.30pm, and they’ve started doing wine bar nights on Fridays and Saturdays, so check the website before you go. The Wyatt is at 77 Werona Avenue, Gordon NSW 2072.
