Cunderdin Hill Lookout Wildflowers – What To Know Before You Go (2026)

Every September for the last few years, someone’s posted a photo of pink flowers stretching to the horizon somewhere up north, I’ve said “we should go see that,” and then we haven’t. This year we actually went. Turns out you don’t need to drive to Morawa for it — Cunderdin Hill Lookout is 156km east of Perth, about two hours, and it delivers.

We left around 10, stopped at Gidgegannup Bakery on the way out (get there before the good pies sell out), had a quick break in Northam, and were back home by 3. We’ve already done York and Toodyay on other trips so we drove straight to Cunderdin this time, but if you haven’t, you can string all four towns into one loop — Perth, Toodyay, Northam, Cunderdin, York, home — without adding much to the day.

No Hiking Required

The lookout itself surprised me a bit. I’d pictured some kind of walk to get to the flowers. Instead you just drive up — it’s a short, well-graded dirt track, fine in a normal car — park at the top, and you’re already standing in them. No effort required, which felt almost like cheating.

The Private Property Problem

One thing that bugged me a little: a lot of the land up there is private property, some of it fenced off, and we watched a few people just duck under the fence to get closer for a photo. Nobody stopped them. I don’t really know how to feel about that — it’s obviously not meant to be walked on, but also nothing was stopping anyone. We stuck to the lookout and the open track and left it at that.

Timing Matters More Than You’d Think

We went in early September and the timing was good — proper carpets of pink everlastings, and canola still glowing yellow in the paddocks below on the drive out. If you’re going later in the month, don’t expect the same thing. By late September the flowers have mostly dried off and the grass loses its green pretty fast out there; the canola tends to hang on a bit longer, but the everlastings won’t. Earlier is better if the flowers are the whole point for you.

Northam As A Pit Stop

Northam ended up being the more useful stop than we expected, honestly. There’s a Bunnings, a Kmart (technically a smaller K Hub, not a full store, but still handy), and enough supermarkets that it doesn’t feel like the middle of nowhere. Worth knowing if you’re low on fuel or someone in the car suddenly needs a bathroom that isn’t a servo.

Planning Around School Holidays

Would We Do It Again?

Yeah. It’s an easy day, nobody in the car complained about being in the car too long, and standing on top of that hill surrounded by pink for absolutely no effort was genuinely one of those “oh, that’s what everyone was talking about” moments.
