About the seminar
This Seminar in Ageing will feature a co-presentation by Dr Lillian Hung, Founder of the UBC IDEA Lab and Canada Research Chair in Senior Care, and Dr Jim Mann, patient partner and co-researcher. Together, they will share how working in partnership with older adults and people with lived experience can shape meaningful, technology-enabled innovations in care.
Drawing on intergenerational patient-oriented research conducted in the UBC IDEA Lab, the session will highlight examples from social and companion robotics, co-created virtual reality programs, and music headphone technologies. These projects demonstrate how engaging older adults as co-researchers can improve relevance, accessibility, and impact, while also challenging ageist and deficit-based assumptions embedded in technology design. The presentation will offer practical insights for policy and program development, illustrating how participatory approaches can inform inclusive, ethical, and responsive technology solutions that support the well-being, dignity, and social participation of older adults and people with disabilities.
