Bonjuk Sunnybank Reviews – Brisbane’s New Korean Porridge Spot

0 6

Took the family to try the newly opened Korean porridge restaurant, Bonjuk.

Korean juk, eating it reminded me a bit of the frozen rice porridge from when I was a kid, water added and boiled up, then all kinds of ingredients thrown in. Rice texture is really strong, everything’s cooked fresh to order. Kimchi served alongside porridge was a first for me though, sour and spicy, genuinely worked.

What we think

Bonjuk seems to be a pretty well known Korean chain, specialising in juk, and it’s now opened in Sunnybank. Good timing too, end of winter into early spring, a warm bowl of something nourishing hits the spot.

  • Portions are huge, one bowl could last me a whole day!
  • Shop itself is a bit small

What We Ordered

Got the ginseng chicken porridge, added a serve of red snow crab meat on top myself, came to $37 total, not cheap. But the flavour was good, portion was generous, plenty for two people to share. Alongside the porridge you also get three small, fairly forgettable plates of kimchi and a small cup of sour plum tea.

Spicy Seafood Porridge

Good, tastes like spicy seafood noodles in porridge form. Fair warning though, it’s properly spicy, skip this one if you can’t handle heat. Finished the bowl and genuinely felt my stomach burning a bit afterward.

Sweet Pumpkin Porridge

This one’s sweet, has little mochi pieces and red bean mixed through. Hadn’t tried it before, wanted to give it a go, decent as a dessert option.
